We know that candy and costume companies put a lot of marketing effort into commercial holidays, like Halloween. According to Google Trends, two of the top searches are related to Halloween and saving money, “halloween costumes you can make at home” and “cheap halloween costumes ideas.”
But other than the obvious, what else are people searching for around Halloween time?
• Information on paranormal activity is in high demand, possibly due to the influx of horror movies and ghastly costumes around this time of year.
• Searches on “swine flu” are prevalent right now. (Don’t forget you can find out a lot at Google Flu Trends, http://www.google.org/flutrends/us/)
• Last October Saturday Night Live was huge, with Ashley Simpson found lip-syncing and Sarah Palin look-alike Tina Fey entertaining show fans.
• In 2007, Guitar Hero 3 was released on October 28th, with lots of buzz leading up to that day.
• Every year, without fail, there are World Series searches all season long with attentive fans looking for the most recent polls, opinions, and predictions.
So what can we guess will be the hot topic next year? Maybe new celebrity scandals. Hopefully swine flu and any other type of flu will be old news. At least we can always depend upon the World Series to keep us entertained.
